Dr. Amr Helmy is the co-founder and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) at Shift EV, an electric mobility startup with a mission of electrifying fleets in emerging markets. Shift EV has developed an industrial process to electrically retrofit commercial vehicles using batteries that the company manufactures. This technology reduces the cost of electrifying mobility and the time required, while offering customers’ deep operational savings with a low carbon solution. The company’s technology is currently deployed with leading last mile logistics fleets, under a battery as a service subscription model. Shift EV is led by an MIT / Intel / GM and backed by Union Square Ventures and other global venture investors.
Prior to Shift EV, he was an Assistant Professor at Zewail City for Science and Technology in the Nanotechnology and Nano-electronics department. Amr’s career in research included prolonging battery lifetime of using low power on-chip networks, and extending the battery power content through the use of alternative and renewable power sources. Dr. Helmy has received several research grants during his academic career mainly in the area of product development in renewable energy in power conditioning as well as power plant monitoring and control systems. Prior to his Academic Career, Dr. Helmy was a Research Scientist at Intel Labs, based in the US, where he led research in on-chip high performance and low power computational systems.
Dr. Helmy received his M.Sc. degree in micro- and nano-electronics from the Grenoble Institute of Technology and University of Joseph Fourier in 2006 and his Ph.D. in micro and nano-electronics from University of Grenoble. Dr. Helmy also holds a B.Sc. degree in computer engineering from Cairo University, Egypt.
